An automatic, self-winding movement is a mechanical movement. It is charged by movement, so it winds itself while worn on the wrist, eliminating the need for batteries. The downside of an automatic movement is that if its not worn or not on a winding watch holder, the watch will stop. So when you wear the automatic watch again and its powered up, you will need to reset the time and date again.
